A SIP phone does not rely on being plugged into a particular UK telephone exchange. It connects to a SIP platform over an IP network, which means a compatible phone can often be used overseas when the network connection and local rules permit it.
How SIP registration works
A VoIP telephone is configured with account details such as a SIP username, authentication credentials, SIP server or proxy and relevant transport settings.
The device connects across the internet to the SIP platform. Once registered successfully, the platform knows where to deliver calls for that account, so a UK number can ring a telephone connected outside Britain.
Does distance matter?
Distance can affect call quality because voice packets have further to travel. A connection between Britain and a nearby European country will usually have lower latency than a connection spanning much of the world.
Connection quality matters as much as raw broadband speed. A very fast connection suffering packet loss can produce worse voice quality than a slower but stable connection.
What affects VoIP quality?
The main network factors include latency, jitter, packet loss and congestion. Local Wi-Fi can also become the weak point even when the broadband connection itself is fast.
For fixed installations, a wired Ethernet connection is normally preferable where practical.
Routers and SIP ALG
Some routers include a feature called SIP ALG. Although intended to assist SIP traffic, poor implementations can cause registration failures, one-way audio, dropped calls or altered SIP headers.
If a SIP phone works on one internet connection but not another, router or firewall behaviour is one of the areas worth investigating.
What about firewalls and restricted networks?
A restrictive firewall may prevent a phone from reaching the SIP service or carrying media correctly. Hotels, public Wi-Fi networks, corporate networks and managed apartment connections may impose restrictions you do not control.
A normal private broadband service where you control the router is generally easier to troubleshoot for a permanent installation.
Remember emergency calling and local rules
VoIP numbers are not necessarily physically tied to the location from which you are calling. If you take a UK VoIP service overseas, do not assume a UK emergency-calling arrangement is a substitute for the local emergency service where you are physically located.
VoIP availability and telecommunications rules can also differ between countries. Check the local rules and the terms of your service before relying on a UK SIP service overseas.
Choose your UK number and how you want to answer it
Search UKDDI number availability, then choose SIP trunk or hosted SIP-phone delivery. If you need a physical handset, compatible VoIP hardware can be added separately or alongside the service.
Service availability can depend on the local internet connection, firewall or router, local telecommunications rules and the UKDDI service configuration. Emergency calling should be handled according to the arrangements applicable where you are physically located.
