Yes. A UK business number can forward to a mobile, ring a mobile application through hosted VoIP, or use a phone system that rings desk and mobile devices. The best method depends on call volume, caller ID, voicemail, reporting, opening hours and the cost of forwarded calls.
Three ways to ring a mobile
The simplest option is network call divert: UKDDI receives the inbound call and forwards it to a UK mobile number. No application or new handset is required.
A hosted VoIP service can ring a mobile application as an extension. A PBX or 3CX system can also route a DDI to a mobile destination, ring group or forwarding rule. These methods provide different levels of control and reporting.
- Network divert: quickest and simplest.
- Hosted mobile app: business identity and extension features.
- PBX or 3CX routing: advanced queues, schedules and failover.
Understand the two call legs
With a basic divert, there is an inbound call to the business number and a forwarded call from the service to the mobile. The business normally pays the forwarding charge according to its tariff.
A hosted app may use mobile data or Wi-Fi instead of a forwarded mobile-network call, but the service still needs reliable connectivity and correctly configured notifications.
Plan the caller experience
Check which caller ID appears on the mobile, where unanswered calls go and whether the mobile's personal voicemail could answer business calls. Decide what should happen outside opening hours and when the user is already on another call.
For a team, sending every call to one mobile can create busy signals and missed opportunities. A ring group, queue or hosted service may provide a better customer experience.
- Original caller ID presentation.
- Business voicemail rather than personal voicemail.
- Simultaneous-call capacity.
- Opening-hours and holiday routing.
- No-answer, busy and unreachable destinations.
- Call recording and privacy requirements.
What number appears on outbound calls?
A basic incoming divert does not automatically make the business number appear when the user calls back from the mobile's normal dialler. Outbound caller ID requires a supported hosted app, PBX route or provider service.
Only present telephone numbers that your organisation is authorised to use. Caller ID should be valid, diallable and capable of receiving a return call where required.
When should you move beyond simple divert?
Call divert is effective for low-volume services and rapid launches. Consider hosted VoIP or SIP delivery when several people need to answer, you need queues or reports, or forwarded-call charges become significant.
You can often keep the same public number while changing the delivery method, subject to provisioning and compatibility.
