Traditional telephone audio is narrowband. G.722 codes a wider speech spectrum, up to 7 kHz audio bandwidth, which can improve consonant clarity and reduce listening effort when the complete path stays wideband.

  • Both endpoints must support and actually negotiate G.722.
  • The PBX, SBC, recording, conference and carrier legs must pass it without narrowing the call.
  • A call entering the traditional PSTN can become narrowband regardless of the office handset.
  • The encoded 64 kbit/s rate still needs packet and network overhead added.

    It can be sensible to prefer G.722 on extension-to-extension calls while retaining the carrier-approved order on the UKDDI trunk.

    Confirm voicemail, recording, IVR, music on hold and conference resources can pass or intentionally transcode G.722.

Questions to check before raising a fault

Remove passwords from screenshots, configuration exports and packet captures before sharing them.

Will G.722 make a normal landline call HD?

Usually not end to end. A narrowband PSTN segment limits the audio even if the office handset uses G.722 on its local leg.

Does G.722 use the same payload rate as G.711?

The common G.722 mode and G.711 both use a 64 kbit/s encoded payload, but G.722 represents a wider speech bandwidth. Packet overhead still applies.

Should G.722 be first on every trunk?

No. Use only the codec order supported for that UKDDI route and prefer G.722 where the full path benefits from wideband audio.
